Solitaire Dungeon Delving/Creation: Session 1

Image
(I think this is from Holmes Basic) I got bored of waiting for a good opportunity to run a game for other people, so I decided to run a game for myself. It is completely off the cuff, using random tables I made along with a heavy dose of improvisation. I rolled up 4 player characters, gave them some background and personality, then dumped them into the completely improvised dungeon. This session was short, around an hour I believe, and I hope to continue the adventure soon. Hopefully by the end of this, I will have a dungeon map and key that can be shared so all of you folks can use it! Heck, when I conclude the journey maybe I will share how I did it, so y'all can try it out! Cast of characters Sylvia Simmons Grim, determined, woman of action Former follower of the Empire, acting as a body guard for inquisitors, before witnessing atrocities committed by the inquisition against suspected witches. In that moment, she felt that she could no longer support her gov...

36 Hideous And Lethal Transformations

Image
WARNING While a lot of my blog already deals with body horror, this is more extreme than usual. There is nothing sexually explicit, but there is a lot of disturbing imagery. If you choose to use this material in your game, please make sure your players are comfortable with this kind of thing.

The Rod Of Heavenly Lightning (And Pigs)

Image
Blogger's Note: Holy shit this post has been in my drafts for far too long, I'm gonna finish it up and post it now. Loki (my fiance who I love very much) came up with this idea based on this die which e gave me for Yule. The basic premise of the weapon is simple: are you feeling lucky, punk? The Rod of Heavenly Lightning (and pigs) is a metal staff with a button in the middle. A hexagonal prism of pink crystal adorns the top of the staff, with 5 faces depicting a lightning bolt, and 1 depicting a pig. When the button is pressed, roll 1d6. On a 2-6, the wielder conjures forth a lightning bolt, dealing [Wielder level]d6+3d6 damage to anyone within line of sight. On a 1, there is a puff of smoke, the Rod clatters to the ground, and the would-be magician is transformed into a pig. The pig retains the INT, CHA, and WIS scores they had before their transformation, but their DEX, CON, and STR become 8. In addition, the victim no longer has opposable thumbs, the ability to we...

The Mantis Man For Holmes Basic

Image
(I couldn't find the source of the image, please let me know if you know its origin) Mantis Man Move:  120 feet/turn/180 feet/turn flying/120 feet/turn swimming Hit Dice:  4 Armor Class:  8 Treasure Class:  nil Alignment:  Neutral Attacks:  2 Damage: 1-6 each The Mantis Man is a strange being that haunts isolated rivers. It is roughly humanoid in shape, with pale brown skin, large eyes, mantis-like arms, and wings which can unfurl from its back. The Mantis Man is a shy creature, and is unlikely to attack unless provoked. It is capable of turning invisible, though it has a 25% chance of its invisibility not working properly, rendering it translucent. Though called the Mantis Man, it is unknown if this creature is actually insectoid in nature, and its origins are similarly shrouded in mystery.

Megadungeon Design For Fun And Laziness

Image
Quick summary: I want to have a megadungeon to run so I can have a fallback if I don't have a more complicated adventure planned. I have some methods I will use to make that possible. (From Dark Souls 3) I want to have a megadungeon to run because I am lazy. In theory, this sounds like a massive contradiction. What could possibly be lazy about having a multi-level maze full of monsters and treasure? Well its simple; megadungeons can just be pulled out at the drop of a hat whenever people want to play D&D but you don't have the energy to run a story-based and complicated adventure. There can be aspects of diplomacy, role playing, and drama from a megadungeon game, but this emerges naturally and requires little intervention from the GM, it helps shift some of that responsibility on to the players. Megadungeons are also good because they can be modular. If you find a nice dungeon someone else made, you can tack it on as a side-level. You can nab rooms from other a...

30 Minute Dungeon: The White Maze

Image
A weird surreal funhouse dungeon, just to get back into the swing of things. Some parts are a bit wonky, I'm out of practice, things have been busy and out of hand this past month. ( Art by Mathew Borrett ) Hook Deep in the woods where few people ever go is a twisted labyrinth of white stone. It has been there as long as anyone can remember, and it is rumored that it comes from a time before humans walked the face of the world. The maze normally has no entrance, and anyone who has tried to climb over the labyrinth's walls has never returned, but rumor has it that once every 300 years it opens; that time is tonight. What secrets could this unearthly place hold? Description The White Maze is a strange structure built by faeries eons ago. Its original purpose is unknown, but the maze has strange properties beyond mortal understanding. For one, the maze occupies less space than it should physically be able to, and for another, time doesn't seem to pass the right way ...

30 Minute Dungeon: Orc Lair

Image
(From Holmes Basic, I believe) Hook Orcs have been seen wandering the wilderness! You have heard tales of their cruelty and monstrous capacity for violence, and from the looks of it, these ones are armed for war. A few remote hermits have had their shacks burned to the ground and their livestock ripped to shreds, though some survivors claim that it wasn't the orcs that killed their livestock, but something horrible that travels with them, The orcs seem to have made their lair in a nearby cave. Description A warband of orcs called the Rusted Teeth are camping out in a cave, leaving by night to raid and pillage. They are small in number, but have an enslaved troll which they use to make up for it. A farmer named Frederick has been kidnapped by the orcs. Combat Encounters Orc Guards Some orcs stand watch, clad in armor made from stitched together leather and rusted steel. One of them wields a heavy crossbow, while the others are equipped with spears and shields. The orc...
