House Rules Update!

Image
Its finally here! The most recent iteration of my house rules system! Here is what is new in this update: Level-less spells! I finally cast off the last of the shackles of the Vancian magic system. The layout is better now, but still nothing is alphabetized. I changed the fonts for some reason! There is some advice/rules for running wilderness crawls and megadungeons! Click here to gaze upon it in all its glory!

House Rules Update + Mini Bestiary

Image
(Image taken from Realms of Crawling Chaos by Goblinoid Games) Its that time again! Its time for me to update my homebrew system!! Link is here Brief summary of what has changed: Rogues are overhauled because the d6 based skill system was too limiting in my opinion, and also made it hard for members of other classes to have anything in the rules pointing towards what to do when a non-combat challenge happened. Instead of a cumbersome system for using a d18 or a d20, instead the rules now only reference a d20, but supply advice for simulating a d20 with d6s as well as other methods. Minor tweaks and additions, including an alternate stat generation system. ALSO I MADE MY OWN PERSONAL LITTLE MONSTER MANUAL THINGY (Image unrelated but Holy Shit !!! Taken from the Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide) A while back I wrote a post about 6 occult tomes , including the Bestiarum Monstrorum, an incomplete manuscript written by a now-dead monster hunter. In the spirit o...

The Blood Goblin (Also Survival Horror Update)

Image
It began after you sliced your finger by accident. You were in the attic, and had bumped into a pile of boxes, causing an old model ship in a bottle to fall to the floor, shattering its container. Cursing your clumsiness, you leaned down to clean up the shards, noticing for the first time the strange magic circle carved into the attic's floor. Distracted, you got a nasty cut on your index finger, causing the blood to flow like a waterfall of crimson. Nothing has been the same since then. The Blood Goblin HP 48 (4 per every hit die the player characters possess in total) AC medium ATK 2 claws (+4 to hit) DMG 1d6+2 Special: The goblin can appear anywhere where there is spilt blood. If even a drop of blood falls to the ground or splashes on to the wall, it is possible for the goblin to teleport to that spot, absorbing the blood as it does so. The Blood Goblin is a demonic entity that feeds on the blood of humans. Every year, it must drink the blood of at least 10 individu...

Testing Out Character Creation

Image
One of the main goals of my house rules is to allow for character creation in around 5-10 minutes, so that less time is spent making a character and more can be spent exploring the unknown. I decided to put that to the test. I set up a blank character sheet, with spaces for things to be filled in when determined, opened up the .pdf, and turned on a stopwatch. My results were better than I expected. 4 minutes and 53.82 seconds later, I had a character, all ready for adventuring. Now, granted, I am the one who wrote the rules, so I already knew what I was doing, but even if it takes the average person twice as long, that is still (barely) under 10 minutes! (Forgive my wretched hand-writing) So, what did I learn from this test? Having a character sheet set up so one can just fill in blanks speeds things up. The most lengthy part of making a character is buying stuff, equipment packs makes things a lot faster. Making a fighter is probably even faster than making a wizard. The ...

V.01.2 Of My Fantasy House Rules!

I reworked the equipment packs, added actual explanation for leveling up, and talked about making new species. Here it is! Let me know what you think!

Some Items From Heretic

Image
Heretic is a nice little first person shooter released in 1994, essentially a fantasy version of Doom. Though the gameplay isn't anything particularly innovative beyond what Doom had already achieved, it did add a number of magical items for the player to use. I've picked a handful of my favorites to be used for old school games, and detailed them below. I hope you enjoy! [Note: For the interests of good gameplay, these items may be slightly modified from their original depiction in Heretic. All images from doom.fandom.com] Morph Ovum The Morph Ovum appears to be a large egg, crackling with green energy. When broken, 1d6 enemies within line of sight of the person who broke it must make a saving throw or turn into a chicken (HD 1 point, AC unarmored, ATK 1 bite, DMG 1 point). Creatures with 5 HD or more cannot be transformed in this manner, but instead take 1d6 damage from feathers bursting out of their skin. Chaos Device The Chaos Device is a small sphere wit...

Is Doom A Megadungeon?

Image
For those of you who don't know the rich backstory of the Doom franchise, let me catch you up on some of the lore; There are demons You have guns Bullets + Demons = Dead Demons Repeat The main gameplay loop of doom is as follows; Arrive at a level Try to find a way to the next level Find keys, avoid traps, and kill monsters to successfully reach the next level to continue the game Does this sound familiar? It seems awfully close to a standard dungeon crawl, minus the treasure of course. "Treasure" in Doom is mostly ammunition, health kits, armor, and power-ups. In addition, there is no gaining levels, and you can respawn at the start of a level when you die. But at its core, Doom has the makings of a megadungeon game. Lets take a look at one of the maps for Doom This is The Hangar, the first level of the game. Its a little hard to read what is there, just from the map to the untrained eye, but it contains 2 traps (pools of acid), 3 secret d...

The Stimulated (A Hunter For Survival Horror Scenarios)

"If you are not very careful  Your possessions will possess you TV taught me how to feel Now real life has no appeal  It has no appeal  It has no appeal  It has no appeal  It has no appeal  It has no appeal  I know exactly what I want and who I want to be  I know exactly why I walk and talk like a machine  I'm now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy  Oh, oh no, oh no, oh no"  -"Oh No", by Marina and the Diamonds Goons with probes inserted into their pleasure centers; wired up so when they kill someone, they get paroxysms of ecstasy. Survival Horror OSR House Rules V.01

Image
Horror is probably my favorite genre of fiction (as shown by my blog), and so I knew eventually I'd have to write up some form of system to do it justice. This system still needs some playtesting, but it seems okay so far. Here is the very early version of my survival horror house rules, I'd love feedback!

Some Spells I Took From Pathfinder

[NOTE: Just a quick little post for today, tomorrow I might write up a dungeon!] So, Pathfinder has this thing where the spells are really long, so in order to make them easier to reference they have a list of spells with a 1 sentence summary of the effect. Using only those summaries, I converted the following spells from Pathfinder to my own house rules. Spells are taken from Ultimate Magic or the Advanced Player's Guide . 1st level Decompose Corpse The flesh of a corpse the caster touches dissolves, leaving behind a clean skeleton. Restore Corpse A skeleton or decomposing corpse the caster touches is restored to the state it was in immediately after death. Sanctify Corpse A corpse the caster touches cannot be raised as an undead creature. Bungle A target within line of sight must make a saving throw or fail whatever attack/action they make next. 2nd level Disfiguring Touch A creature the caster touches must make a saving throw or become hideously ugly, effe...

House Rules V.01 PDF and 2 Characters

The PDF Here is a link to the current version of my house rules, feel free to steal and mess with as you will, preferably giving credit to me. Characters So, one of the main things I wanted to accomplish with my house rules was extremely fast character creation, something that I deem essential to a high mortality game. I stripped down as much as I could, while still leaving enough to allow for some player choice (admittedly, fighters kind of get the short end of the stick here, but they're powerful enough that that doesn't really matter). Characters in my house rules can be made in about 5-10 minutes, and here are two that I made for funsies. Heinrich the Norseman Species: Human Class: Fighter Level: 1 HP 8 AC Unarmored (Light Armor, -2 from DEX) STR 16 (+2) DEX 5 (-2) CON 9 INT 11 WIS 11 CHA 12 Attack(s) Greatsword, +3 to hit, 1d6+4 damage Inventory Leather armor Greatsword Backpack Lantern 3 oil flasks 7 coins Backstory -Left his village...

The Re-Animation Reagent

Image
I recently rewatched the excellent Stuart Gordon film Re-Animator  (a loose adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "Herbert West - Reanimator"), and I immediately found myself wanting to write up the re-animation solution from the film as an item for OSR games. So here it is! (Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West) West's Reagent The re-animation solution created by Dr. Herbert West has a consistency similar to milk, and glows bright green. It is typically found in small, plastic or glass containers, holding 1d6 doses each. When injected into living tissue, it revitalizes and rejuvenates the user, causing them to regain 1d6+1 hit points and not need to sleep or eat for 24 hours. However, it is highly addictive, and after a week of consistent use, one must make a saving throw each day they do not take the reagent or take 1d3 damage and a -2 penalty to attack rolls for the day. This withdrawal lasts 1d3 weeks. However, the primary effect of the drug occurs when injected into co...

The Brain Eaters (My Take On Mind Flayers)

Image
A hunched over, bearded figure in a brown cloak stumbles towards you in the dark, pitiful and weak looking. You sigh, wishing not to attack such a humble creature. He probably is just an old beggar, lost and cold. If you had your way, you'd let him into your master's house, but your orders are specific. "Halt!", you shout, "Turn back please, Master Smith is not accepting visitors at the moment". At this, the cloaked man stops his stumbling, and looks up at you. Though you can't see his face, you feel fear, as though the ragged old man in front of you is gazing into your very soul. Then, before your eyes, he begins to change.  He, no, it, begins to stand up, unfolding from its hunched position. As it straightens, the thing you once thought was only 5 feet tall at the most now stands nearly 7 feet in height. The worn, brown cloth gives way to hideous, wet looking black leather. The gray beard morphs into a mass of writhing, purple tendrils, dripping ...

My House Rules: Monsters and Combat Encounters

Image
Monster Combat Statistics HD (Hit Dice, how many d6 are rolled for hit points, as well as what bonus is applied to attack rolls. 1/2 HD is 1d3 Hit Points, with no attack bonus.) AC (Unarmored, light, medium, or heavy, with or without shield.) ATK (Number of attacks and attack name/type.) DMG (Wow much damage is dealt on a hit.) HDE (Hit Dice Equivalent, or how many hit dice this creature is worth. A typical encounter has hit dice of creatures equal to the combined levels of all adventurers in the party. Creatures with special abilities have higher hit dice equivalents, at least 1 or so higher than normal.) Any special abilities are listed in the creature's description. Making a Combat Encounter Now I'm not that big of a fan of super balanced, planned out encounters, but if every encounter is either mind numbingly dull or incredibly hard, it can get a little bit annoying. Usually, the following should be true about combat encounters: The total HDE of all enemies ...

My House Rules: Just a Big Ol' Mess of Mechanics

This post is kind of a mess, and I'll probably compile an easy to use house rules document in pdf format at some point. Feel free to steal anything you want from this (especially my d18 I'm stupidly proud of that). Stats Roll 3d6 to determine stats (Attribute Scores).
